23 This means that the thing known must also be received by, or made the object of, a gnosis in which it is not only known but loved in such a way that the knower is gripped by it and responds to it holistically, a response that combines knowledge and love. In other words, everything that participates in structure participates in the Logos character of God. The necessity to express this experience symbolically betrays reason's unity with and distance from Godunity because such experience is possible, and distance because the experience of this unity cannot be expressed with clarity and precision.
Thus Tillich and Jung locate the reality of the divine within both nature and man, and understand the development of man as a process of growing into this awareness. These questions can now be addressed. Both signs and symbols point beyond themselves but signs and symbols are not the same. They differ because symbols participate in that to which they point. Symbols open up levels of reality otherwise closed to consciousness. Symbols open up dimensions of ourselves otherwise closed to us. Hence, like Tillich, Jung is of the opinion that a symbol contains an element that defies rational precision.
But for Tillich and Jung the dynamic symbolized by the Trinity arises from man's depth experience of his own life processes, human and divine. As the psyche enters into this flow it participates in an energy and balance of opposites which is experienced as of the divine; a symbol such as the mandala is a universal expression of this experience of balanced centredness (either actual or longed for). Thus the countertendency to polytheism gave rise to monotheism, which placed the reality of the divine so far beyond man that it was divested of sensible reality and so of the possibility of personal manifestation to man.
