Silas Bryan was one of the most important men in town. In 1870 he owned $18,000 worth of real and personal property, a sum which put him sixth in the township. " His judicial circuit included a half-dozen counties; travel often kept him away from home for days at a time. Well-known in a number of communities, Silas Bryan came within a few votes of being elected to the House of Representatives in 1872. Most residents of Salem and other small towns led a more isolated life than Silas Bryan. Travel was usually limited to the distance a horse could travel in a day.

In contrast to the perfectionist leanings of the Methodists and Baptists, these groups believed that salvation came only through God's grace. Feeling no compulsion to perfect society, they regarded prohibition as a nativist assault on their lifestyle. Such groups usually affiliated with the Democrats, because Democrats showed a long history of opposing nativism, anti-Catholicism, and moral reform.
