Research methods for investigating bilingualism and multilingualism need not be different from methods already available to us in related disciplines. The choice of methods, however, is central to a study and will depend on theoretical ideas concerning the phenomena we are asking questions about. Good research practice – no matter what the approach – requires a clear understanding of where one’s research fits into the overall picture of explaining bilingualism. It also involves an ability to critically analyze a research design and to understand the purpose and underlying assumptions that go with selecting a particular topic.

Where? and why? in relation to your research topic. Such basic questions direct you in the critical reading of the literature related to your topic and also help you to identify what questions have not yet been adequately answered in the field. The role of reading is crucial at all points of your research but at different stages you will be asking different questions about what you are reading. Reading and guidance from an experienced investigator – especially when embarking on research for the first time – are basic for deciding what questions are interesting and which ones will make a new and original contribution to the field.

Nevertheless, the future of the field requires a more comprehensive framework that transcends the narrow scope of disciplinary research. So, what are the main challenges to bilingualism and multilingualism research as it moves forward to a transdisciplinary future? First, there is the issue of language. Each discipline develops its own jargon. Communication across disciplines may prove to be difficult since it requires the use of technical terms that are not well understood by colleagues in the other relevant disciplines.
